The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN), has said that the current reforms in the judiciary are focused on restoring the sector to its rightful place of pride.

Speaking at the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference during a breakout session titled “The Bar and the AGF,” on Tuesday in Lagos, Fagbemi stated that the National Justice Summit presented the national justice road map, currently being worked on.

He also outlined other reforms, including collaborations with foreign nations to recover stolen national wealth and partnerships with anti-corruption agencies to ensure the swift prosecution of corrupt individuals.

“We are also engaging with the police on issues surrounding the rule of law, the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act, and the reform of correctional homes and services,” Fagbemi added.

The AGF said that collective responsibility is important in driving justice reforms, stating, “Everyone is a stakeholder in justice reform; therefore, everyone has a role to play.”

Earlier in the session, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) commended the minister, saying, “This is the first time such a session is being held at the NBA conference, and I know that the Attorney General is deeply passionate about the development of justice and the rule of law in Nigeria.”

He also expressed optimism about the ongoing reforms, saying, “If done well, these reforms will propel the nation’s development in all directions since the law impacts every aspect of national growth.”
