The children of late singer, Onyeka Onwenu, have described their mother as a beacon of inspiration and love, following her sudden death on July 30.

“Our mother, Onyeka Onwenu, was a beacon of inspiration and love. Her sudden demise has left us heartbroken,” Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende said in an appreciation post on Wednesday.

The Ogunlende brothers also acknowledged the efforts of Reddington Hospital staff, expressing gratitude for their attempts to save Onwenu.

“We deeply appreciate the dedication of the Reddington Hospital team. Their efforts in our mother’s last hours will never be forgotten.”

They noted the support they received from notable figures, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Labour Party stalwart, Peter Obi, Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, “as well as Messrs Ajayi and Mr. Okpara for being with her during her final moments and for their continued support.”

As the family makes preparations for Onwenu’s funeral, they urged the public to remember and celebrate her life and the indelible impact she had on so many.

They said, “Onyeka Onwenu was more than an artist; she was a national treasure whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations. We ask everyone to join us in honouring her memory.”

Onyeka Onwenu was born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. She began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She has since released numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”

Onwenu has also acted in several Nollywood films and has won numerous awards for her contributions to music and film. She has been recognised as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.

Onwenu has been recognised for her contributions to Nigerian society, including being awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
