Nigeria’s top badminton player, Anuoluwapo Opeyori, is brimming with excitement as he prepares to begin his Olympic quest at Paris 2024 on Tuesday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Opeyori, 27, who will face Switzerland’s Tobias Kuenzi at La Chapelle Arena in his opening match at 6:30 pm, took to social media platform X on Monday to express his eagerness for his first match.

“First matchday at the 2024 Paris Olympics tomorrow (Tuesday) by 6:30pm C.A.T. I’m very sure you guys can tell how excited I am. I will give it nothing but my absolute best,” Opeyori wrote.

In an accompanying video, the Nigerian star added, “I am excited for my first game in the Olympics Paris 2024. It is an honour to represent Nigeria. I have put my heart and soul into training every day and night, and I am happy to represent.”

He emphasised his commitment to giving his absolute best for the country, hoping to make Nigeria proud in his second Olympic appearance.

Opeyori has already made history as the first Nigerian to qualify for two consecutive Olympics following his debut at Tokyo 2020.

In addition to his opening match, Opeyori will face China’s Li Shi Feng on Wednesday. Despite the tough competition, the Nigerian star remains focused and optimistic about his performance.

The Badminton Federation of Nigeria has thrown its full weight behind Opeyori, providing him with extensive preparation before the Games, including a three-week training camp in Italy.

BFN President Francis Orbih earlier expressed joy at Opeyori’s achievement, stating, “History was made in badminton after Anuoluwapo Opeyori secured a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“I am full of joy because Anu is the first Nigerian badminton player to feature in the men’s singles at the Olympic Games and also the first Nigerian to attend two Olympics back-to-back.”

Opeyori’s journey has been a testament to his dedication and hard work, as he aims to showcase his talent on the world stage and bring glory to Nigeria.
