Osun Govt Shuts Steel Mill Company, Others Over Tax Evasion

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s government of Osun State has taken action to close a steel mill company situated in Ikirun, the administrative centre of the Ifelodun local government area, due to tax evasion.

A statement released on Friday (today) by the Information Officer of the Osun Internal Revenue Service (OIRS), Oluwaseun Ayeni, indicated that this action is part of the agency’s ongoing tax enforcement strategy.

The tax enforcement team, under the leadership of Prince Adesola Adewumi, the Executive Chairman of OIRS, issued the directive to shut down the company and other business establishments due to their lackadaisical approach to tax compliance and the harmonized demand notice from the Osun Internal Revenue Service.

He noted that Prism Steel Rolling Mill and other entities had been previously served with harmonized demand notices, urging them to meet their statutory obligations to the state government, yet they failed to take the necessary actions.

“The refusal to be obliged with fulfilling the company responsibility to the state led to the sealing of the business premises,” Adewumi elaborated, stating that a specific deadline has been established for all businesses within the state to settle their outstanding bills.

He expressed his disappointment regarding their unwillingness to fulfil their financial obligations to the government, despite the extension granted by the state governor since the end of July this year.

He urged all businesses in the state to take responsibility and not compel the state government to pursue them for their statutory duties.
