Students from various tertiary institutions in Ogun State staged a protest at the State Police Command headquarters in Abeokuta, in response to the alleged killing of their colleague, Idowu Pelumi David, by an unidentified hit-and-run driver.

David, a student of the state-owned Gateway Polytechnic, was reportedly struck and killed on Monday, July 8, 2024, in front of the NYSC Orientation Camp in the State.

The protesting students, under the banner of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), demanded justice for their deceased colleague. They presented a protest letter to Police authorities, calling for the immediate identification and prosecution of the culprit. The protesters, armed with placards bearing various inscriptions, caused significant traffic gridlock as they blocked the road.

The students specifically alleged that a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was responsible for the death of David. They expressed their frustration and anger, claiming a cover-up attempt in the incident.

A NANS representative stated, “This peaceful protest is to express our sadness and grievance over the senseless crushing to death of Idowu Pelumi David, a National Diploma 1 Public Administration student of the Gateway Polytechnic, Ayepe Annex, by a staff of the National Youth Service Corps in the state.”

In response, the State’s Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, assured the students that an investigation had commenced to identify and prosecute the offender. Represented by his Deputy Commissioner in-charge of Operations, Manger Fergus, CP Alamutu pledged that the Police would thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure justice is served.
