Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, hosted the winner of the ninth edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, Adeola Adefemi, at the State House on Thursday.
In a statement on X.com on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu expressed pride in Adefemi’s achievement, noting that it underscores the progress of public education in Lagos State.
He wrote, “Today, I received Miss Adeola Adefemi, an English Language teacher at Keke Senior High School in Agege, who was awarded the overall national prize in the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition.
“She emerged as the winner of the 9th edition, standing out among 1,200 teachers from 36 states.
“We take immense pride in Miss Adefemi’s accomplishment. Her success reflects the progress of public education in our state and highlights the resilient, can-do spirit that defines Lagosians.”
He also encouraged Adefemi to continue striving for excellence, reminding her that the award brings added responsibilities to both her profession and the state.
In his statement, Sanwo-Olu further emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting education through increased budgetary allocations for infrastructure, skill development, and teacher training.
He added, “As a government, we remain dedicated to prioritising education through comprehensive budgeting for all aspects, including infrastructure, skill development, and training.
“This ensures that our teachers and students have the resources they need to thrive.”
PUNCH reported in November 2023 that, as the winner of the ninth edition of the competition, Adefemi won an all-expense-paid capacity development training in the UK.
She also received a total cash prize of N6.5 million, and the firm added that funding would be provided to also build either a fully equipped computer laboratory or a six-classroom block worth N20m for her school in her honour.
