President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for a historic gathering of African descendants in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.

The event, scheduled for October 2024, is expected to draw over 2,000 participants from across the globe.

The Homecoming Event, organised by the African Descendants in Diaspora Union (AfriDU) in partnership with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), aimed to strengthen ties between Nigeria and its diaspora community.

This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to harness the potential of Nigerians abroad for national development.

President of AfriDU, Professor Arch-bishop Chidiebere Anelechi Ogbu, announced the event during a courtesy visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

The delegation, comprising Nigerians from South America, the USA, and Canada, expressed their readiness to invest in Nigeria, contingent upon being granted a sense of belonging and Nigerian citizenship.

Senator Akume, welcoming the initiative, praised the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora to the economic and technological advancements of their host countries.

He assured that NiDCOM would collaborate with AfriDU to develop a policy framework facilitating the reintegration of Africans of Nigerian descent to their ancestral land.
