Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has called on the prospective candidates of political parties to obtain nomination forms for the election into the offices of chairmen and councillors of the 17 local government councils from the commission.

The chairman of the commission, Mr Plangji Cishak, made the call while addressing a news conference on the revised notice of the election in Jos.

He said, “As part of the commission’s mandate and in compliance with Part IV, Sections 16(1) and 22(1) of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2016, Section 197(1) & (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended 2023) and Electoral Act, 2022, (PLASIEC) wishes to notify the leadership of all political parties and the general public that elections shall be conducted in the (17) local government councils of the state on Wednesday, 9th October 2024.”

He explained that despite the #EndBadGovernance protests which degenerated into the imposition of curfew and later culminated in the inability of some political parties to conduct primary elections, the commission is fully prepared to conduct the LG election on the earlier fixed date.

Cishak also noted that the latest events have made it necessary for the commission, in collaboration with political parties and other stakeholders, to adjust activities in the build-up to the elections to ensure that political parties that have earlier scheduled their primaries and have notified the Commission within the period of the protest and curfew are not disenfranchised.

He enjoined all political parties and stakeholders to support and cooperate with PLASIEC to organise a free, fair, credible, and transparent local government council election in the state.
