Plateau State Government has said it will prosecute 40 suspected sex workers and cultists arrested on Friday by the police.
The suspects, according to the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, were arrested when the operatives raided some black spots in the Bukuru area of Jos South Local Government Area of the state.
Alfred, in a statement, said, “As part of our efforts to rid the state of all criminal elements, the Plateau State Police Command has carried out a raid operation in various black spots within the Jos – Bukuru metropolis and arrested about 44 suspects, both male and female.
“The suspects, most of whom were young adults were arrested for various offences, including 20 Sara-Suka cult members, suspected prostitutes and other offences.”
In a video accompanying the police statement, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Caroline Pangiang, condemned prostitution among young girls in the state, describing it as unacceptable.
According to her, those arrested will be prosecuted accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others before rehabilitating the sex workers.
“This administration will not stop at making sure that we do the right thing, and that is why I have to come here to collaborate with the police and stop this menace that is staring at us in the face on the Plateau,” the commissioner stated.
