Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for concerted efforts to bridge the gaps in healthcare assets, infrastructure, and funding in the country.
The former President’s request came as the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, disclosed plans to establish a Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) to respond to the healthcare needs of the people.
Speaking at the maiden Health Summit organised by the Church, yesterday, in Abuja, Jonathan urged religious organisations to play a transformative role in the country’s healthcare system, adding that their influence, reach, and thrust within communities can bridge the gaps in the healthcare system and bring Nigeria closer to achieving the Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
He stated that by advocating equitable healthcare policies, supporting health education initiatives, and fostering partnerships with the government, and private sector entities, the Church can play a transformative role in shaping the future of healthcare in Nigeria.
Jonathan urged religious organisations to work with the government to build a healthcare system that leaves no one behind, where every Nigerian has access to quality and affordable healthcare services.
He observed that the Church’s holistic approach to community development could help create an environment where individuals can thrive physically, mentally, and spiritually, imploring the Anglican Church and all faith-based organisations to continue their unwavering commitment to health and social justice.
