Police Affairs Minister seeks safe resettlement for Mokwa flood disaster victims

The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, has assured the displaced residents of Mokwa in Niger State, that the federal government, through the Nigeria Police Force, is taking all necessary steps to secure affected areas and ensure the safety of those who have been forced to resettle in neighboring communities.

Thousands of residents had been rendered homeless, following the devastating flood disaster in the community, which also resulted in loss of lives and properties.

The minister, in a condolence message to the government and people of Niger State over the tragedy, emphasized that while the Ministry of Police Affairs is not directly responsible for humanitarian aid, it plays a critical role in ensuring public safety, law, and order during and after natural disasters.

Gaidam informed that the Mobile Police units would be reinforced in temporary camps and host communities to prevent criminal exploitation of vulnerable individuals, including women, children, and the elderly.

He said: “The protection of lives and property remains a top priority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

“We are working closely with the Inspector General of Police to ensure that displaced persons are provided with adequate security as they rebuild their lives.”

Gaidam described the incident as deeply saddening and acknowledged the pain and trauma being experienced by the affected families and communities.

He, however, commended the efforts of local authorities, first responders, and volunteers who have swiftly moved to mitigate the impact of the flood and provide immediate relief.

The minister called on community leaders and local vigilantes to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and safeguarding humanitarian operations in the affected areas.

He also urged the public and private sectors, as well as international aid organizations, to complement the government’s efforts by providing relief materials, healthcare, and resettlement assistance to the victims of the flood disaster
