A 62-year-old man, identified as Tahir Ahmed, has been apprehended by the Bauchi Police Command for allegedly producing counterfeit naira notes.

The arrest was announced by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, on Tuesday.

According to Wakil, the incident began on August 6, 2024, when a passenger traveling from Sabon Garin Narabi Toro LGA, Bauchi State, to Bauchi boarded a commercial Vectra vehicle.

During the journey, Ahmed, who boarded at Tilden Fulani Market in Toro Local Government Area, reportedly engaged in suspicious activities.

Wakil noted, “On the 6th of August, 2024, a concerned citizen from Jos North LGA, Plateau State boarded a commercial Vectra vehicle from Sabon Garin Narabi Toro LGA, Bauchi State, en route to Bauchi.

“Upon reaching Tilden Fulani Market in Toro Local Government Area, Bauchi State, a 62-year-old man named Tahir Ahmed stopped the vehicle and joined the journey to Bauchi.

“While in transit, Ahmed allegedly transformed some papers into new one thousand naira notes through what appeared to be ritualistic chanting, giving rise to suspicion that the notes might be counterfeit.”

Following an investigation, Ahmed confessed to the alleged crime, and police recovered counterfeit notes totaling two hundred and thirty-eight thousand naira from him.

Wakil added that further investigation is underway, with the police commissioner, Auwal Muhammad, directing the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to request a forensic analysis from the Central Bank of Nigeria to verify the authenticity of the seized notes.
