The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the killing of a middle-aged man, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway in the state.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victim was attacked on Thursday morning by armed men driving a Toyota Sienna vehicle.

According to one of the witnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the assailants shot the victim in the stomach and abandoned his body at the scene.

“The attack happened along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway. The gunmen, who were riding in a Toyota Sienna, shot the man in the stomach and left him for dead before fleeing. The police operatives from Ozubulu Division came the following day to remove the body,” the eyewitness recounted.

Confirming the incident in a statement released on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the victim’s body was recovered following a distress call to the police.

“In the early hours of January 23, 2025, police operatives attached to Ozubulu Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway and recovered the body of a yet-to-be-identified young man,” Ikenga said.

The police spokesperson added that preliminary investigations revealed the victim was shot in the stomach by suspected armed men who fled the scene.

“The command seeks assistance from members of the public to identify the victim and provide any information that could aid the ongoing investigation. The body has been deposited in the morgue, and further updates will be communicated,” he stated.
