Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has called on Nigerians to take an active role in safeguarding the nation’s electricity infrastructure from vandalism.
The minister’s call came amidst growing concerns over frequent attacks on power facilities, which had been detrimental to the country’s efforts to improve electricity supply and infrastructure development.
Adelabu, while receiving members of the Civil-Military Committee on Energy Security, said the issue of vandalism had been a major concern to the Federal Government, particularly on critical national assets.
The minister said: “We must let the vandals know that it will never be business as usual. We all know what these vandals have done to our national assets. Daily, they deprived us of providing stable and affordable electricity to homes, industries, and all critical sectors of our economy. That cannot continue and that is what we are determined to achieve.”
Leader of the group, Mr Adams Otako, said the importance of the energy sector in the nation’s development motivated their desire to embark on providing security for such national assets.
“We believe that the energy sector is the bedrock of the national security. Guarding it is a collective responsibility and we want to also tell Nigerians that until we begin the ownership of governance, we can’t develop.”
