It was mixed fortunes for Nigerian clubs at the CAF inter-club competitions, at the weekend, with Enugu Rangers barely managing to qualify for the second round of the Champions League, while El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri were eliminated from the Confederation Cup.

Enugu Rangers managed to scrap through to the Second Round of the CAF Champions League by forcing visiting U.S. de Zilimadjou to a 1-1 draw at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Rangers won the first leg at the same venue a fortnight ago by a lone goal and therefore qualified for the second round on a 2-1 goals aggregate. Both legs of the game were played in  Nigeria because the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled that Comoros Island does not have a venue fit for a game of CAF Champions League standard.

Kenechukwu Agu gave Rangers the lead in the 79th minute when he converted a penalty awarded following a foul on Ekeson Okorie in the box.
Youssouf Mohamed, however, drew the Comoros side level with just four minutes left on the clock as he nodded home an inviting cross that the Rangers backline failed to defend.

They will now meet either St. Louis F.C of Seychelles or Sagrada Esperanca F.C of Angola in the Second Round. On Saturday, El Kanemi Warriors became the first Nigerian side to be eliminated from African inter-club competition when they were beaten 2-1 in Cotonou, by Benin Republic’s Dadje FC.

El-Kanemi drew the first leg of the tie with the Beninoise side 1-1 in Nigeria and needed a win or a goalless draw in Cotonou to qualify for the second round. Instead, they lost 2-1 to exit the competition.

Nigeria’s second team in the CAF Champions League, Remo Stars, were meeting Morocco’s ASFAR in the second leg of the first-round tie in Rabat, last night.
Remo Stars travelled to Morocco with a 2-1 lead over the team that eliminated them from the Confederation Cup two years ago.
