The House of Representatives member for Enugu North/South Constituency, Chimaobi Sam Atu, has called on the federal government to release detained #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters across the country.

The Labour Party member said the continued detention of protesters who participated in the August hunger protest is illegal.

Chimaobi Atu reiterated that protest is a constitutional right of the citizens that cannot be taken away in a democracy.

In a statement on Thursday, Honourabe Atu, further demanded that the government take the detained hunger protesters to court or release them unconditionally.

The continued detention without trial of individuals who peacefully participated in the recent protests is unacceptable. Everyone has the right to peaceful protest. These individuals across all the states should be released unconditionally or be allowed to have their day in court,” Atu wrote on his X handle on Thursday.

He assured that the House of Reps will look into the detention of protesters on September 17.

We are currently on recess [long break] to resume on September 17th. We shall do the needful,” Atu added.

Naija News reported that about 1000 hunger protesters were arrested and detained across Nigeria, according to Amnesty International.

Recall that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor Forum, in a communique after their last meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State demanded the release of all detained protesters. The opposition governors blamed the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration for the hardship in the country.

The governors said the hunger protest in August was a product of economic hardship caused by President Bola Tinubu’s economic policy.
