- Southampton defender Jack Stephens is set for an extended period on the sidelines after his red card vs Manchester United
- Stephens got a direct red card for bringing down Alejandro Garnacho during their 2-0 defeat at St. Mary's Stadium
- He will now miss a total of five games for Russell Martin's side, who have made a slow start back in the Premier League
Jack Stephens is set to miss more games after the Football Association (FA) sat down and deliberated on his red card.
The Southampton defender was sent off on September 14 during their Premier League game against Manchester United at the St. Mary's Stadium.
Stephens was shown a direct red card after a last-ditch tackle on Alejandro Garnacho in the 79th minute. Referee Stuart Atwell made the call with the VAR supporting the decision.
Why Jack Stephens will miss five games
As a result, Stephens was banned for three games in accordance with FA guidelines on serious foul play. However, his conduct attracted further scrutiny, with the officials reporting that he swore at them.
The 30-year-old came back to the pitch to pass on the armband, where he used some expletives on the fourth official, Gavin Ward and Attwell. According to FA's statement, he was found guilty of breaching Rule E3(1) and has thus been suspended for a further two games and handed a £50,000 fine.
Which games will Stephens miss?
Stephens has already missed a cup game against Everton and league games against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth.
He was set to return this weekend but with the additional two-match suspension, he will also sit out of the Saints' assignments against Arsenal and Leicester City.
Why Bruno Fernandes' red card was overturned
This comes after Bruno Fernandes' red card was overturned. Legit.ng reported that the Manchester United captain was sent off against Tottenham on September 29.
Fernandes caught James Maddison with a high challenge, with referee Christ Kavanagh producing a direct red card.
The Portuguese midfielder will now be available for United's next three games after the decision was rescinded.
