The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA, in conjunction with Evangeline’s Care and Wellness Foundation (ECWF), has donated learning materials, including exercise books, schoolbags and shoes, to students of De Wisdom Special School, Umuebulu 1 in Etche local government area of Rivers State.

Speaking during the presentation, President of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA, Douglas Okafor, said the gesture was in fulfilment of a promise made to the school last year.

Okafor said: “This visit is very essential for us this September. September is normally Rotary’s emphasis on educational interests. It is our month of focusing on education. But for us as a club, it is a month of focusing on inclusive education, which means capturing those segments of society and children that are not covered by the regular curriculum of the Ministry of Education, which is children with special needs.

“What we have done today is to fulfill the promise that we made to them last year when we had a forum where we educated care givers. We tried to teach them how to take care of these children with special needs. We promised to keep supporting them and what we have come to do here today is to show that support.

“We brought them learning materials; books, school bags, school shoes, writing materials. We also brought food items for them. This school has 53 students and we made sure we brought for each and every one of them from nursery to secondary. We also brought food items that are enough to last till the end of the term at least. This is to ensure that they don’t lack.”

Responding, the proprietor of the school, Anthony Uzoma, thanked the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA, for coming to the aid of the children with special needs.

Uzoma said: “Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA visited today and they came with a lot of goodies. The parents of these children will be very grateful, knowing that exercise books and school bags are very expensive.

“This is a great relief to the parents in this time in Nigeria. I say more grease to the elbow of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt.”
