Sallah: Cleric preaches moderation among Muslim faithful

An Islamic cleric and a lecturer at the Department of Religions, Lagos State University Ojo, Dr Sidiq Uthman, has advised Muslim faithful to exercise restraint during the Sallah celebration.

The cleric said this was necessary considering the current economic situation in the country where the prices of rams and other necessities had soared.

According to a market survey by Sunday PUNCH, prices of rams ranged from N500,000 to N700,000, while the lowest price for a ram was N250,000.

In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Uthman said Muslims must not indulge in lavish spending that exceeds their financial capacity.

He added that they should prioritise basic necessities such as ensuring access to three square meals daily, stressing that they must celebrate within their means to avoid unnecessary financial strain.

He said, “They have to be cautious of what they do. People should not celebrate the Sallah beyond their capacity. The most important thing is three square meals. They must also understand that sooner or later, their wards will still resume school.

“So, they should prioritise their well-being. People who usually travel should calculate transport fares; if they can’t afford it, they should celebrate wherever they are. There is no place one can’t celebrate.

“The reality is that to eat one square meal is difficult, let alone to buy a ram. So, when one borrows, how does he or she pay? At the moment, some companies are looking at reducing the workforce. So, people should do what is within their capacity. Many more Sallah celebrations are coming. May next year be easy for us all.”

Also speaking, A Lead Missionary at Nasrul llalhi l fathi NASFAT, Adepoju-Alaseyori Ridwanullahi, said, Muslim faithful should spend judiciously,

He stated, “Muslims must cut their coat according to their cloth. They should ensure they spend within their means and they should not go about borrowing money.”
