Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leveraging the state’s tourism potential as a driver of economic growth.

Speaking at the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 on Saturday, themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of the state’s waterways in fostering economic prosperity and cultural heritage.

“We are indeed excited that we can finally have a boat regatta, the beginning of what will be a lot of activities that are going to happen during this Yuletide season. This one, being a very first, is a demonstration of our commitment to develop tourism potential in Lagos,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted that Lagos, with one-third of its landmass surrounded by water, has untapped potential in water-based tourism. He further noted that the regatta, which featured displays of boats and water infrastructure from the state’s five divisions, showcased the beauty of Lagos waterways while promoting the state’s hospitality.

“It is going to be a day and afternoon of sheer tourism, fun, and understanding the beauty of the waterways of Lagos. Let us relax, sit back, and enjoy the beauty of serenity and tourism potential of the state and the hospitality of Lagos,” he said.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, also expressed optimism about the event’s impact on the state’s economy. She described the regatta as a platform for immersing participants in Lagos’ rich waterway culture while creating opportunities for local businesses and solidifying the state’s status as a premier global destination.
