Tottenham Hotspur captain, Son Heung-min has revealed how coach Jose Mourinho insulted him in front of his teammates at the club.

Son Heung-min revealed that Mourinho had reprimanded him during a game in front of the other players, telling him how he might not be able to play against Burnley and Stoke City, implying that those games were too tough for him.

Son said he was upset over the public nature of the rebuke, stressing that he was not a young player to be treated in such a manner.

However, Mourinho later messaged Son, explaining that he didn’t intend to hurt him and that he needed to hold the best player at the club accountable to set an example for the rest of the team.

Son admitted that after reading the message, he felt reassured and understood Mourinho’s perspective.

The captain of the South Korea national team said: “One time Mourinho told me off during the game. [He said] ‘I don’t think you want to be in a game with a team like Burnley or Stoke (rough game)’ in front of all the players and I was so upset about it, I’m not even an 18-19-year-old to be treated like that.

“Later after the match, the coach texted me, ‘I know you understand that it wasn’t my intention to target and hurt you. But I need to make sure that other players are not being lazy, and I need to show them by telling off the best player in the team, and for me, that player is you.’ And after reading that text, I feel good.”

Note that Son Heung-min played under Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur from 2019 to 2021. Unfortunately, the Portuguese tactician was sacked from the club without winning any title with Spurs.
