Former President Muhammadu Buhari had implemented the ‘no work, no pay’ policy against the two unions following their four months industrial action in 2022.
The National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, wondered why the salaries are yet to be paid despite repeated assurances from the Federal Government.
President Bola Tinubu, had recently instructed that the union’s withheld salaries be paid, but Ibrahim said members are yet to receive the money. Ibrahim said the union halted its rally due to the hunger protest and insecurity in the country, saying members might be forced to shut down the universities if government fails to settle them.
He said: “We are worried that three weeks after President Tinubu’s directive that our withheld salaries be paid, there’s still no action. Members are unhappy, frustrated, and tired. We’re repeatedly told that ‘work is in progress,’ but nothing is being done. We only suspended our indefinite strike due to the current security situation in the country, but if this continues, we may have no choice but to shut down the system completely.”
