Stakeholders advocate reliable water supply

Stakeholders in the built economy have emphasised the need for reliable and sustainable water supply systems in housing designs.

They called for innovations in water designs for housing in the country.

The founder of RitePlace Synergy Limited, Dr Chukwumezie Okolo, called for a paradigm shift in water management, emphasising the need for intentional development that prioritises health and environmental impact.

“As we move forward, it is essential that we adopt a more intentional approach to development, one that prioritises the health and well-being of our citizens and considers the impact on our environment.”

He advocated for smart homes that prioritise water treatment solutions and eco-friendly sewage disposal systems, emphasising that access to quality water is a fundamental human right.

He called on policymakers, real estate developers, and stakeholders to prioritise water quality in housing designs.

However, the Chairman of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria, Dr Samson Opaluwah, stated that water supply is the exclusive responsibility of the government and water supply authorities, not property developers.

“Water supply is the business of the water supply authorities, which is largely the government. You cannot ask developers to start ensuring the quality of water that they don’t produce,” he stated.

He suggested that occupants could install water purification systems at their level, while builders ensure that fittings are in place in buildings.

“Occupants can install water purification systems at their level. We should ensure that our public water systems work. In the buildings, we reticulate and make sure that the fittings are in place and where they are designed to be,” he explained.
