Sterling One Foundation has highlighted the importance of empowering girls as the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child on Friday.

In a statement made available to our correspondent, the Foundation, which is focused on tackling the root causes of poverty in Nigeria, and Africa, said the global celebration was a reminder that girls hold immense potential to shape the future.

The 2024  International Day of the Girl Child celebration is themed ‘Girls’ Vision for the Future,’ and conveys both the urgency of action and the hope driven by the power of girls’ voices and their vision for a better tomorrow.

Commenting on the significance of this year’s theme, the Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, Olapeju Ibekwe, said, “Empowering girls to realise their vision for the future is essential for building a more equitable society. Our programmes focus on giving them the tools and opportunities they need to lead and succeed.”

It was also revealed that through its STEM for Her initiative, the foundation had impacted over 2,000 girls, primarily in rural areas, by inspiring interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The initiative equips girls with essential skills to lead and innovate, with a particular focus on addressing global challenges, such as climate change, through mentorship and practical learning.

Sterling One Foundation also prioritises efforts to address gender-based violence, reaching over 3,000 beneficiaries. In collaboration with partners such as the United Nations Population Fund, Live Abundantly, SCALE Palladium, and the British High Commission, the Foundation has launched awareness campaigns, advocated for stronger protective policies, and provided critical support to survivors.

According to the foundation, these initiatives ensure that every girl can pursue her ambitions in a safe and supportive environment.

It stated its commitment to expanding its reach and impact, ensuring more girls have access to the education, resources, and protection they deserve.

The foundation called on all stakeholders to join in creating a world where every girl’s voice is heard, and their vision for the future is realised.
