The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that Augustine Eguavoen, the current technical director of the federation, will step in as the new coach for the Super Eagles.
This means that Augustine Eguavoen, who led the Super Eagles to a round of 16 finish at the 2021 AFCON and failed to qualify them for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, will lead them in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
This decision comes following the refusal of German coach Bruno Labbadia to manage the three-time African champions.
Note that the NFF announced the appointment of the German tactician on Tuesday, August 27 and he was expected to help Nigeria qualify for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Interestingly, that responsibility will fall on another coach.
In the meantime, Augustine Eguavoen will take charge of the team in an interim capacity.
Recall that the former Nigeria international has previously taken charge of the Super Eagles in 2005-2007, 2010, and 2022, making this his fourth stint as head coach of the national team.
The Super Eagles are set to play against the Benin Republic’s national team at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 7.
Following this, they will face the national team of Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali three days later.
The team is scheduled to commence preparations for both matches in Uyo starting next Monday.
