Southampton’s manager, Russell Martin, has expressed excitement over the return of Nigeria international Paul Onuachu to the club this summer.

Paul Onuachu, who made a surprise return to action for Southampton last weekend, was described by Martin as being a transformed player compared to last season.

The 30-year-old Nigerian striker made a notable cameo appearance as a substitute in Southampton’s final pre-season friendly against Getafe, playing for 18 minutes. This marked his first appearance for the club since the EFL Cup defeat to Gillingham over a year ago in August 2023.

After an underwhelming start in England, where he struggled to find the back of the net in 12 appearances for the Saints, Onuachu was loaned out to the Turkish side Trabzonspor.

However, his loan spell in Turkey saw him excel, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 matches. This performance made Trabzonspor to request for a permanent deal.

Despite ongoing negotiations, Onuachu featured for Southampton in their friendly against Getafe, leaving a positive impression on his manager.

Russell Martin expressed his satisfaction with Onuachu’s performance and highlighted the striker’s improved confidence and attitude.

“I just think he’s different from what we have. He’s trained really, really well,” Martin told the Daily Echo.

“He’s a different Paul to the one I came across last season in terms of confidence. I think the last preseason was so difficult for so many of them.

“They hadn’t had a chance in the Premier League, or they’d come in January and not really taken to it that well.

“This summer, he’s a different beast, and whilst he’s here, same as Kyle Walker-Peters, we will try and utilize him.”

While Southampton are looking to sell Onuachu, the only offer received so far is from Trabzonspor, who made a £5 million bid which was rejected.

As the transfer window deadline approaches, Southampton’s striking options are limited, with Sekou Mara and Onuachu being the only fit number nines ahead of their upcoming league campaign opener against Newcastle United on Saturday, August 17th.
