Super Eagles’ Sadiq Umar Apologizes Over Abusive Post

3 months ago 55

Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Sadiq Umar has recently found himself in hot water due to a social media post that has since been deleted.

During the weekend, Sadiq Umar posted and then promptly deleted a picture of a middle finger, which is commonly interpreted as an offensive gesture.

While the motive behind the post remains unknown, there were suggestions that it could have been directed at Real Sociedad after purportedly being informed that his services were no longer required. Umar later posted an apology, stating that the initial post was a mistake and not intended to target anyone.

“Apology for my recent post; it was a post by mistake; I didn’t do it intentionally. I am not referring to something or against anyone,” he wrote.

“Thank you for your understanding. Y’all should stay blessed.”

This is not the first time Sadiq Umar has been embroiled in social media controversy, as he previously posted about facing online bullying from Nigerian fans in 2022.

Umar’s time at Real Sociedad has been challenging since he joined the team from Almeria in the summer of 2022 for a reported fee of €20 million.

He initially started the 2022-2023 season strongly, scoring three goals in five matches, including a debut goal against Atletico Madrid. However, a subsequent injury kept him sidelined for 11 months, and he has struggled to regain his form since returning from the injury.

In light of his uncertain future at the Anoeta Stadium, Umar had expressed a desire to leave the club back in May.

Speculation arose about a potential move to Getafe in the summer, but no concrete developments have emerged thus far.
