Super Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali has shared his thoughts on the top five Nigerian footballers of all time.
Nigeria, a three-time African Cup of Nations champion and the winner of the gold medal in football at the 1996 Olympic Games, has produced a remarkable array of footballing talents.
In an interview on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified, Stanley Nwabali provided a list highlighting some of the most iconic figures in Nigerian football history.
His selections feature prominent personalities such as Jay-Jay Okocha, known for his dazzling skills during his tenure at clubs like Bolton Wanderers and Paris Saint-Germain. Okocha’s flair and creativity on the ball have made him a beloved figure among fans and a source of inspiration for many aspiring footballers.
Another football icon on Nwabali’s list is Nwankwo Kanu, an Arsenal legend renowned for his exceptional versatility and critical contributions to the Premier League side during one of their most successful eras. Kanu’s ability to perform in crucial moments has solidified his status as one of Nigeria’s football greats.
Nwabali also recognized the talents of John Obi-Mikel, a Chelsea midfielder whose vision and composure were pivotal in the Blues’ successes during his time at the club. Mikel’s experience in top-tier football has earned him admiration from fans and peers alike.
Adding to this impressive lineup is Vincent Enyeama, a goalkeeper whose stellar performances at Lille and the Nigerian national team have made him a household name. Enyeama is often regarded as Nigeria’s best-ever goalkeeper, known for his remarkable shot-stopping abilities and leadership qualities.
In a noteworthy inclusion, Nwabali also highlighted the talents of Victor Osimhen, the current Super Eagles striker and reigning CAF Footballer of the Year. Despite being relatively new to the football scene, Osimhen’s explosive talent and consistent performance have marked him as one of Nigeria’s all-time greats.
Osimhen’s contributions played a significant role in Nigeria’s journey to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Côte d’Ivoire, and he has quickly become a key figure in the national team.
The tournament was a pivotal moment for Nwabali as well, who made a strong impression in his debut for the Super Eagles.
Although he narrowly missed out on being named the tournament’s best goalkeeper—an award that went to South Africa’s Ronwen Williams—Nwabali’s performances showcased his potential and highlighted the depth of talent within Nigerian football.
