Tax Bill Will Strengthen Economic Reforms – Jibrin

In response to public concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed tax bills, Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin, representing the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State, has called for patience and open-mindedness, stating that the bill will strengthen economic reforms in the country.

Speaking on a television programme, the former chairman of the House Committee on Finance addressed misconceptions, stating that opposition from the North often arises from misunderstandings rather than informed consensus.

“There’s a crisis of perception here; people hear ‘tax reform’ and assume it will harm them without reviewing the details. Many critics haven’t even examined the bill. It’s not about imposing new taxes on the common man but addressing systemic issues to benefit society,” Jibrin said.

Jibrin highlighted protective “buffers” within the bill designed to prevent negative impacts on Northern states, assuring that these measures would shield the region from disproportionate effects.

“These provisions safeguard Northern interests while enabling necessary reform,” he explained.

He emphasised that the reforms aim to create a sustainable, equitable tax system for all Nigerians, regardless of region or income.

“The North has untapped potential, and this bill offers a chance to strengthen our economic autonomy,” he added, urging a collaborative approach to the process.

Concluding, Jibrin called for a national focus on the broader goals of the reform, encouraging all parties to prioritise the country’s long-term progress over political differences.
