The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has honoured Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state with the NUT Golden Award in recognition of “his transformative efforts in reforming the state’s education sector.”
A statement issued on Sunday, October 6, said the governor was decorated during the World Teachers’ Day 2024 celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja, on Saturday, October 5.
The Punch reported that the event, organised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, brought together teachers and education stakeholders from all 36 states of Nigeria to celebrate their contributions to the education system.
In his remarks, NUT National Chairman, Titus Ambe, emphasised that only six governors were selected for this honour, based on their dedication to advancing education, particularly in terms of supporting teachers’ welfare and ongoing training.
He noted Governor Yusuf’s administration’s significant strides in improving the education landscape in Kano state.
“Notably, he allocated 29.9 per cent of Kano’s 2024 budget to education and declared a state of emergency in the sector, leading to enhanced infrastructure and increased access to quality education,” the NUT Chairman said.Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to further investing in education, Daily Trust reported.
Meanwhile, the awardees, also included the governors of Borno, Oyo, Benue, Enugu, and Kebbi states.

World Teachers' Day: 3 governors declare Public Holiday
In a related development, Legit.ng reported that the governments of Osun, Kwara, and Ogun have declared Monday, October 7, as a public holiday for teachers in their respective states.
The governors explained that the work-free day is to commemorate the 2024 Teachers’ Day celebration.
The work-free day applies to both public and private schools while school will resume academic activities on Tuesday, October 8.
