Former President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, has continued with his tradition of sharing lists of his favourite music and movies twice a year, and two of Nigeria’s international music export, Temilade Openiyi, well known as Tems; Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, made the list of standout tracks the former POTUS is currently listening to.
The list consists of over 40 songs, which includes new acts and some classics such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, Blackstreet, The Rolling Stones and Etta James. Also on the list is Nigerian-American singer-songwriter, filmmaker and record producer, Collins Obinna Chibueze, professionally known as Shaboozey, and South African music sensation-cum Grammy awards winner, Tyla.
The former U.S president, who recently endorsed Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, has been posting yearly playlists each summer since 2015, when he was still in the Oval Office. “With summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately – and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to!” he posted on his X handle @Barack Obama.
A common question is whether the former U.S potus actually curates the playlists himself, with many questioning if he has a team behind him making his frequently brilliant picks. Responding, Obama refuted the claims that a team is behind his selections.
Shaboozey’s energetic and infectious hit, A Bar Song (Tipsy), tops the list of songs on the playlist. The song, which also topped the Billboard Hot 100, has accumulated nearly 800 million streams across Spotify and YouTube Music, and has earned Shaboozey recognition from Billboard as close to becoming a household name in this era of country music.
While Tem’s Love Me Jeje released in April to widespread acclaim made it on No. 4, following her debut performance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon in May. Rema’s Yayo, a track from his dynamic and boundary-pushing album, HEIS, made the list as the 24th song on the list; just as Tyla’s track Jump, featuring Gunna and Skillibeng, is the 30th on the summer playlist.
She had earlier showcased the song with an elegant, show-stopping performance at the 2024 BET Awards.
