As part of its severance package for retired dockworkers, Five Star Logistics Terminal has disbursed N122 million to 94 recent retirees at the seaport terminal.

Terminal Manager, Five Star Logistics Limited, Jaysing Kamthe, who presided over the event, expressed delight at the peaceful termination of the contracts and described the development as a fulfillment of the terminal’s responsibility to its workforce.

He said the terminal engaged four stevedoring companies that provided about 94 workers who are being properly disengaged. He disclosed the four stevedoring companies as Ilutex Limited, with 21 workers, Sahih Limited, with 25 workers, Macbanadot with 26 workers; and Good Intentions, with 22 workers.

Kamthe said the workers have received their cheques, demonstrating the company’s prompt commitment to their welfare. He thanked the workers for their service to the terminal and praised the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) for its role in managing peace and professionalism among the workforce.

Also speaking, the Human Resource Manager at the Terminal, Clement Imoh, noted that in the past, when seaport terminals disengaged dockworkers, it often led to conflicts and disputes between the union and the organisation.

He said the terminal management maintains a very good relationship with its workers and the unions.  Imoh advised the disengaged workers to gainfully utilise the severance package through investments or businesses that guarantee a steady flow of income.

The MWUN said it was encouraging to see terminal operators, unions, and workers on the same page regarding the retirement package for dockworkers. The union commended the terminal management for prioritising the welfare of the disengaged officials.
