As part of its severance packages for retired dockworkers, Five Star Logistics Terminal has paid over N122m to 94 recently retired dockworkers.

The terminal operators disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

The Terminal Manager of Five Star Logistics Limited, Mr Jaysing Kamthe, while presenting the cheques on Tuesday at Tincan Island Ports, Lagos, described the development as a fulfilment of the terminal’s responsibility to its workforce.

Kamthe expressed delight at the peaceful termination of the contracts.

“Five Star engaged four stevedoring companies that provided about 94 workers that are being properly disengaged today.

“They have received their cheques, which demonstrates the company’s prompt commitment to their welfare,” Kamthe said.

He stated that the four stevedoring companies included Ilutex Limited with 21 workers, Sahih Limited with 25 workers, Macbanadot with 26 workers, and Good Intention with 22 workers.

The terminal manager, who appreciated the workers for their service to the terminal, also praised the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria for its role in managing the peace and professionalism of the workforce.

The Human Resource Manager at the terminal, Clement Imoh, explained that disengaging workers at the seaport terminal, especially dockworkers, was usually characterised by conflicts.

“What we have witnessed today is unique because it is a peaceful occasion. This is the best way to disengage workers,” he noted.

According to Imoh, the management of Five Star Terminal has a very good relationship with its workers and the unions.

“We respect and value everyone; from the President General of MWUN, Adewale Adeyanju to the lower union members,” he said.

He, however, advised the disengaged workers to gainfully utilise the severance package via investments or businesses that guarantee a steady flow of income.

Five Start Logistics Terminal is a multipurpose terminal operator located at the Tincan Island Port.
