No fewer than three persons have been reportedly gunned down following the gunshots that rocked the elections organised by the Jonathan Lokpobiri-led Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) for the Eastern Zone in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital.
DAILY POST reports that the number of casualties is yet to be ascertained at the moment, but some eyewitnesses said about three persons were killed, while several others were injured.
According to The Nation, the gunshots rattled the area, sending residents to different directions for safety.
The Spokesperson of the Rivers Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the violence, described the shooting as ‘senseless’.
The statement, however, failed to confirm if any casualty was recorded during the incident.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, quickly dispatched the command’s tactical unit to the scene, but the assailants scampered.
“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police Rivers State has swiftly dispatched Tactical Teams to the scene, but before the arrival of the Police, the perpetrators have run into their hiding places.
“The Commissioner of Police has given marching orders to track down the perpetrators and bring them to face the full wrath of the law”, the statement added.
