President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the bills establishing development commissions for the South-East and North-West regions of Nigeria.

Naija News reports that the South-East Development Commission bill, sponsored by Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker representing the Bende federal constituency in Abia State, was approved by both the Senate and the House of Representatives before being forwarded to the President for assent.

The commission will receive funding to implement various projects within the geopolitical zone, including addressing environmental challenges such as erosion and the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads in Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, and Anambra states.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu thanked President Tinubu for signing the bill into law.

He emphasized that the commission will play a significant role in “rehabilitating Igbo land” and promoting unity among its people.

President Tinubu also signed the bill establishing the North-West Development Commission.

Jibrin Barau, Deputy Senate President and sponsor of the bill, stated that the legislation’s approval is a “testament” to Tinubu’s “commitment to addressing the challenges facing the North-West geopolitical zone and all parts of the country.”
