Tinubu determined to reposition Correctional Centres, says lawmaker

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Services, Chinedu Ogah, has said that President Bola Tinubu is determined to reposition Correctional Centres to impact the skills and well-being of inmates.

Ogah stated that Correctional Centres should not just be seen as a place of punishment but one designed for reformation and rediscovery of talents and skills.

He said the move to relocate some Correctional Centres was part of the efforts to reposition it.

The lawmaker representing Ikwo/Ezza south federal constituency, who stated this during a visit to the Abakaliki Correctional Centre, urged the 1,269 inmates to embrace positive attitudes that could promote peace and tolerance during their stay in the facility.

Ogah, who added that he was at the facility as part of the activities for his 48 birthday celebrations, urged the inmates to continue to love one another.

The lawmaker who donated food items, clothes, toiletries, sewing machines, and other materials worth over a hundred million naira, said it was part of his support to ensure inmates live a good life and improve themselves while in the facility.

He stated that the National Open University study centre in the facility was to enable those interested in further studies to do so and keep them busy and distract them from further crimes.

He expressed happiness however that the purpose of setting up the facility was being realized with the number of inmates that have embraced it.

Accompanied by his wife, Mary, and some stakeholders, he urged the inmates to desist from those things that brought them into the place, adding that the future is still bright for them.
