The proponent of the proposed National Commission for the Co-ordination and control of the proliferation against small arms, ammunitions and light weapons (NATCOM), Dr. Baba Mohammed, has said that the re-election of Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu as chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for the second consecutive tenure was a right step in the right direction.
Dr. Mohammed, in a statement issued in Abuja, emphasised that the 65th ordinary session of the Community held in Abuja on Sunday, saw Nigeria making new commitment to incentivise the fight against terrorism in the ECOWAS sub-region with its counter-terrorism centre.
He said assenting to the NATCOM Bill passed by the 9th National Assembly will no doubt assist the nation, the ECOWAS sub-region and indeed Africa in checking proliferation of small arms, ammunitions and light weapons.
“This is largely because the NATCOM Bill proposed by Dr Baba Mohammed is in line with ECOWAS Convention 2006 and to which Nigeria is a signatory,” the statement added.
The statement, therefore, congratulated President Tinubu, Nigerians, member-states of ECOWAS and indeed the entire Africa.
