In an interview, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) outlined its comprehensive financial options, housing support for international students, and initiatives to foster inclusiveness, particularly for Nigerian and black students.
Are there any scholarships, grants, or financial aid opportunities available specifically for international students?
According to TMU, the University has made several scholarships, awards, and funding resources available for undergraduate and graduate international students. They include:

The university also added that it offers all students educational workshops on financial literacy.
Are there any additional fees or expenses that international students should be aware of beyond tuition?
In addition to tuition fees, TMU stated that international students are expected to pay for accommodation, transportation, books and supplies, food, and personal expenses. The University provided a detailed breakdown of these expenses on its International Admissions page.
Are there any work-study programs or opportunities for international students to earn income while studying at TMU?
TMU mentioned that it offers several opportunities for international students to gain work experience, such as:
- The Career Boost – this provides a set number of positions on campus exclusively to international students.
- The Career, Co-op, and Student Success – hosts a job search club for international and newcomer students.
- Hosting sharing circles – which address specific topics including but not limited to job search/ workplace environment.
- TMU's International Student Support team also offers immigration advice to help students gain legal access to employment in Canada, both on and off campus, as well as co-op and work placements.
It also mentioned that the University offers additional initiatives to support international students, which include:
1. Housing
- TMU helps students find their new home away from home, whether in an on-campus residence or off-campus housing. First-year international undergraduate students with a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) who apply by the fall housing application deadline are guaranteed a spot in the first year or supported in finding an off-campus winter option.
- The University co-hosts workshops to help students understand their rights as tenants in Canada.
2. Food security
The TMU Eats is dedicated to helping students fight food insecurity at the University. Some initiatives include:
- The "Friendly Fiver" is a budget-friendly daily meal for just $5 in the main campus eatery. The University is committed to this celebrated deal despite rising food costs.
- Students and community members can also enjoy a monthly Free Soup Day. The University stated that over 4,500 soups were served in the 2023/2024 academic year.
- During the final exam period last spring, the University provided undergraduate and graduate students with free hot meals and snacks. According to TMU, more than 18,200 free meals and snacks were served between April 15 and 25, 2024.
- Over the holiday break last December, the University offered 1,000 Skip the Dishes gift cards ($50 value each) to support students with immediate food needs.
- Students in need were recently provided 100 meal packs containing five passes to the University's All You Can Eat dining halls.
3. Support for Nigerian students
TMU stated that Nigerian students represent many of the University's international students from Sub-Saharan Africa. It said:
