After the 2024 European Championship and Copa America finals, the arrangement of the 2024 Ballon d’Or power rankings has changed slightly.
Before the two tournaments, Vinicius Junior was rated as the number one player in the 2024 Ballon d’Or power rankings meaning that he was the favourite to win the prestigious football award.
Most football enthusiasts saw him as the favourite then because he helped Real Madrid to win the UEFA Champions League and the Spanish La Liga titles with 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 games in all competitions.
Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t reciprocate his club form at the international level with Brazil.
During the just concluded 2024 Copa America which Argentina won, Vinicius managed to score just two goals as his team crashed out of the competition in the quarter-finals which he didn’t play because he was serving a one-game suspension.
Due to his failure at the Copa America, Manchester City and Spain star, Rodri is now seen as the favourite to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
Recall that Rodri helped Manchester City to win the Premier League for the fourth successive season and led them to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the final of the FA Cup.
At the international level, the 28-year-old defensive midfielder helped Spain to win the Euro 2024 title by playing in every game of the tournament without losing.
At the end of the tournament, Rodri didn’t only win it, he also won the competition’s best player award even though he didn’t score a goal nor provide an assist.
