- Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the footballing scene for a period spanning over a decade
- The stellar performances consistently shown by both players have sparked significant debate with regard to who is better
- Liverpool defender, Trent Alexander-Arnold recently, aired his thoughts on who he deems the best player he has ever seen
The debate over who is the best player in the world often ignites passionate arguments among football fans and experts alike.
When the discussion centres on Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, distinguishing the edge each player holds over the other becomes particularly challenging.
Despite being in the latter stages of their careers, both Messi and Ronaldo continue to dominate the footballing world after more than 16 years at the top of their game.
However, as this debate rages on, many players have shared their opinions on which of these two generational talents is superior.
The latest to weigh in is Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold. In a recent interview, the 25-year-old revealed his perspective on who he considers the greatest player of all time.
Trent speaks on the best player ever
In a recent interview with The Mirror, the England defender was asked who he considers the best player he has ever seen. The Liverpool star unequivocally named Messi as the greatest player of all time.
“It has to be Messi for me,” Alexander-Arnold said. “He’s the best player I’ve ever played against and the best player to have ever played the game. I can’t even imagine anyone being better than what I’ve witnessed. There’s no way anyone can surpass him.”He continued, “Playing against Lionel Messi is a unique experience. There’s an unparalleled sense of alertness whenever he’s near the ball. It’s rare for a player to instil such a feeling in opponents, and for that reason, I have to say he’s the best.”Alexander-Arnold further explained, “In so many aspects of the game, Messi is probably the best. At any given moment, he can almost do whatever he wants on the pitch, which is why I consider him the greatest.”The Liverpool vice-captain’s endorsement of Messi adds to a growing list of football legends, including Paolo Maldini, who have also chosen Messi over Ronaldo in recent interview as captured by Barca Universal.
Messi picks 2024 Ballon d'Or contenders
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Messi has named Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe among the frontrunners for the 2024 Ballon d’Or award but has excluded Jude Bellingham from the race.
The England midfielder, who had a stellar debut season with Real Madrid, is expected to provide stiff competition to whoever is in the running for the prize.
The Ballon d’Or, which both Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi have largely dominated over the last decade, saw the Argentina captain add another to his record-extending accolade following his triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
