Two suspected bandits were arrested at the Janruwa Grazing Reserve in Kanya District of Danko Wasagu Local Government Area, Kebbi State.
The arrests were made by the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), which has been actively patrolling the area.
Hussaini Bena, Chairman of the Danko Wasagu Local Government, confirmed the incident, stating that he was informed of the arrest on Wednesday by the District Head of Kanya.
He said the vigilantes apprehended the suspects during routine patrols, and despite an attempt by one of the bandits to escape, local residents assisted in ensuring his capture.
Bena praised the vigilance of the community and directed that the suspects be handed over to the police without harm.
He also noted that during the arrest, one of the vigilantes’ guns malfunctioned while attempting to subdue the fleeing suspect.
In his statement, Bena expressed gratitude to the Kebbi State Government for providing logistical support to the vigilantes, stating the commitment of both the vigilantes and volunteers to maintaining security in the area.
He also urged residents to report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the arrests.
SP Nafiu Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, assured that the suspects were in custody and further investigations were underway.
