South African singer Tyla stole the spotlight at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards, held in Manchester, UK, on Sunday. The talented artist took home three prestigious awards, solidifying her position as a rising star in the music industry.

Tyla won the Best Afrobeats Artist award, beating out stiff competition from Nigerian artists Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr. She also claimed the Best African Act award, defeating Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.

In addition to these accolades, Tyla won the Best R&B Artist award, outshining American stars Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét. Her impressive wins were capped off with an acoustic performance of her hit song “Water,” which left the audience in awe.

Unfortunately, Nigerian artist Ayra Starr, who had four nominations, went home empty-handed. This was a disappointing outcome for her fans, who had been rooting for her to win.

Tyla’s wins at the 2024 MTV EMAs are not her first major accolades. Earlier this year, she won the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys and Best Afrobeats Artist at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards, both times surpassing Nigerian artists.
