A Nigerian man, Brendan Nwabichie, will receive £28,000 for a new car following the destruction of his former vehicle during the UK riots. This update was shared on X by The Daily Mirror reporter, Melissa Sigodo, on Sunday.

Sigodo had earlier reported that the company raising money for a carer whose car was burned during the riots said they were “refunding everyone’s money.” She added that on GoFundMe, the company wrote that “someone” had released “fake news” that they would “only be giving him £3k of the money,” which “jeopardised their safety.”

In an update on Saturday afternoon, however, Sigodo said the company had changed its mind and decided to give Nwabichie £28,000 for a new car and insurance.

“UPDATE: The company’s statement that they were ‘refunding the money’ appears to no longer be on the GFM website. Instead, a new one has appeared stating that ‘Brendan will be receiving £28k to cover the cost of his new car and insurance,’” she said.

A check on the company, Clare’s Care GoFundMe account, corroborated Sigodo’s update.

“Hi everyone, unfortunately there has been speculation about the amounts Brendan would be receiving. We always intended to fund Brendan’s new car along with additional expenses and stated that anything further would go to help our staff and local charities/organisations in the area helping those that were affected by the riots,” the company wrote.

“To clarify, the exact amounts we have set out are as follows: Brendan will be receiving £28,000 to cover the cost of his new car and insurance.”
