The first female president of the Student Union Government of the University of Calabar, Blessing Alims, has drawn attention with her recent decision to appoint 50 aides.

In a letter announcing the appointment of the aides and dated August 1, 2024, Alims stated, “After careful evaluation of each individual’s conduct, credibility, enthusiasm, transparency, and commitment to advancing the Students’ Union Government, I am pleased to announce the following appointments to enhance the efficiency of our administration.”

The appointments cover a range of roles, including Special Assistants on politics, sports, religious duties, media, and more.

After the letter surfaced online, many criticised Alims for appointing such a humongous number of aides. But, defending her decision, she issued a statement through her press secretary, Chinenye Madueke, on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.

In the letter titled, ‘Addressing concerns on appointments’, Alims said, “The Students’ Union Government is responsible for the welfare and progress of our entire university community. Just as a single tree does not make a forest, effective governance for a student body of over 42,000 requires a collaborative effort. A diverse and capable team is essential to successfully implement our initiatives.”

Alims, who is a student of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolutions at the Department of Political Science, became the SUG President on June 14, 2024.
