The organised labour in the telecommunications industry, Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association (PTECSSAN) has given Huawei Technologies’ management team a seven-day ultimatum to address and resolve all issues with their workers or face the wrath of the union.

PTECSSAN said they are dissatisfied with the way and manner Huawei technologies and all its subsidiaries have been working against the welfare of their workers

The PTECSSAN General Secretary, Comrade Okonu Abdullahi, who made this known to journalists in Lagos, claimed that the indefinite strike became imperative following the deliberate efforts by the management to frustrate their workers from unionization, contrary to the law governing employers and employees as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and International Labour Organisation (ILO).

While reiterating the threat, Abdullahi said, “PTECSSAN, rising from her meeting, has declared an indefinite strike action effective 12 am Monday, September 9th, 2024, of field workers, i.e., Field Maintenance Engineers (FMEs), Transmission Engineers (TEs), Customer Service Engineers (CSEs), Fibre Engineers, Fibre Optics Engineers, Riggers, Fibre Engineers, Fibre Optics Technicians, and others in the telecoms sector.

“The strike action has become inevitable because of the prevalent precarious working conditions our members are enduring in the sector, the refusal of the employers to recognise and respect the constitutional right of these workers to freely associate with the Union and the unjust sack of three members of the Union.”

According to the Union, “We shall not be suspending the planned indefinite strike action until our demands for the immediate reinstatement of the three unjustly sacked workers, Sotola Sunday Kolawole, Ulu Ikechukwu Christopher and Alex Franklin C is met by the management team.’’
