As former President Donald Trump claimed an early lead in key states, the atmosphere shifted from hopeful anticipation to sadness.

Why Harris chose Howard University for election night

Harris, a proud alumna of Howard, had chosen the historically Black university as her campaign’s home base for the election night.

According to 19th News, Howard University is a place she fondly describes as “home.”

At the start of the evening, the gathering on “The Yard” was a lively display of support, a watch party and a rally, with hundreds of students and supporters celebrating.

As poll results started trickling in, initial optimism gave way to anxiety as projections showed Trump with a strong lead.

Harris lost 2 crucial battleground states

Major news outlets, including CNN and MSNBC, alongside Decision Desk HQ, projected Harris losing two crucial battleground states: Georgia and North Carolina.

Formerly reliable Democratic strongholds in the Rust Belt—Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania—early returns showed Trump leading in the critical “Blue Wall” states.

Arizona and Nevada also hung in the balance, with both candidates within striking distance.

As the night wore on, the atmosphere at Howard grew sombre.

Democratic party's future uncertain

Students and supporters watching on large screens on the university grounds grew silent, anxiously following every shift in the data.

Many who had been energized by Harris’s historic campaign—one that promised a continuation of progressive policies and representation—now questioned the party's future.

“Kamala has been a trailblazer for so many of us here, and seeing this unfold is really tough,” said Lauren Thompson, a Howard sophomore.

Laureen added that most of them felt let down and confused about where to go next.

Why Democrats are unhappy with party

Trump’s apparent success in mobilizing his base to regain the White House prompted a wave of discouragement among Democrats.

Some members of Harris's base, especially younger supporters, expressed frustration and hinted at distancing themselves from the Democratic Party.

They felt that their voices and concerns were not effectively addressed in this election cycle.

Political analysts suggest that Harris’s campaign faced an uphill battle amid voter concerns about the economy and a divided Congress.

Trump makes comeback to White House

Donald Trump won the 2024 election to make his return to the White House after defeating Kamala Harris in key states, including Texas and Florida.

In his victory speech, Trump described the win as a historic moment, given the Republican candidate is also set to win in the popular votes.

With Trump winning the vote, a significant reshuffling appears likely within the Democratic ranks as they regroup and assess the way forward.
