The USA's Gabby Thomas has bagged gold in the women's 200m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, beating Saint Lucia's Julien Alfred.

The American clocked 21.83 seconds to upgrade her bronze medal from the 2021 Tokyo to gold, her first at the Olympics.

Thomas succeeds Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herah, who had won the last two titles in the distance but missed the Paris Games.

Alfred clocked 22.08 seconds to get her hands on the silver medal to add to the gold she won in the women's 100m.

The USA's Brittany Brown took bronze in 22.20 seconds, while Nigeria's Favour Ofili finished sixth, per Olympics.com.

Thomas was the favourite to win the event with world champion SHericka Jackson out with injury and Thompson-Herah missing in action. The 27-year-old could land another gold medal if she is in the 4x100m relay team.

Great Britain duo Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Julien Alfred wins 100m gold

Legit.ng earlier reported that Julien Alfred defeated Sha'Carri Richardson to win the women's 100m final at the Paris Olympics.

Richardson was the favourite to win after veteran Shelly-Ann Fraser and Shericka Jacon pulled out with injuries.

Alfred clocked 10.72 seconds to win Saint Lucia's first ever Olympic Medal, sparking joyful celebrations in the tiny country.

Noah Lyles wins gold in 100m

Legit.ng also reported that Noah Lyles narrowly defeated Kishane Thompson to win the men's 100m final.

Lyles, who had failed to impress in the earlier rounds, won the race with a time of 9.79 seconds, beating Thompson by five-thousandths of a second.

It was Lyles' first gold medal at the Olympic Games, and he is on track to end the competition with two more.
