Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State will, today, flag off the third phase of the SkillUpImo programme in Owerri. This phase, known as Cohort 3A, marks another milestone in the state’s ongoing digital transformation initiative under the Ministry of Digital Economy and E-Government.
According to the ministry, following the success of Cohorts 1 and 2, with many of the graduands already monetising their skills as technopreneurs and others securing various employment opportunities, 40,000 Imolites are admitted for Cohort 3, which is split into A and B, each comprising 20,000 learners.
In a recent Facebook live session, the Commissioner for Digital Economy and E-Government, Dr. Chimezie Amadi, confirmed that in-person classes for Cohort 3A would commence on August 15, 2024, across all 15 learning centres in the state. He added: “Cohort 3A promises an enhanced learning experience for both students and instructors. ”
Amadi said that the state government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (M0U) with the Digital SME Alliance, an arm of the European Union (EU) engaged in developing digital talents and digital technology.
This alliance is focused on providing mentorship and access to a talent pool of digital professionals for exchange programmes in Europe.
“Exposure to hackathons, competitions, and interests from entrepreneurs and venture capitalists are poised to provide support and funding for learners’ innovative ideas converting them into services and wealth creation for Imolites,” he noted.
Addressing the new learners, the commissioner stressed the importance of maintaining at least 80 per cent attendance and reminded them to carry their identity cards, which serve multiple purposes, including class access and student verification during pre-graduation and the collection of start-up kits.
The curriculum for Cohort 3A includes a wide range of courses such as Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), Gamification and Simulation, Virtual Assistance, Front-end Development, Back-end Development, Mobile App Development, Cloud Engineering, Project Management, Network and Fibre Splicing, LAN Networking, Computer Appreciation, Car Tracking, Phone Repairs, and CCTV Engineering.
The SkillUpImo Project is rooted in the First Pillar of the Imo Digital Economy Agenda (IDEA) 2022-2026 on Digital Literacy and Skills with the objective of positioning Imo as Africa’s Skills Hub.
This, it intends to do through the training of 300,000 Imolites in new innovative and Industry 4.0 skills set that equips them to align in a digitally evolving world.
Uzodimma, he added, places a high premium on the SkillUpImo project owing to its capacity to achieve the triple objectives of positioning the state as the digital skills hub of Africa, tackling unemployment, diversifying, and building the state’s digital economy.
