West African Examination Council (WAEC) has announced the release of results for the 2024 May/June West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
The examination, which was held for a period of seven weeks and six days spanning from April 30 to June 24, had a total of 1,805,216 candidates who sat the exam from 25,126 recognised secondary schools in the country.
The council said a total of 1,301,941 candidates, representing 72.12 per cent, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Speaking, yesterday, at the WAEC office, Yaba, the Head of Nigeria National Office, Dr Amos Dangut, said out of the candidates that sat the exam in the country, 1,685,889 candidates, amounting to 93.39 per cent had all their papers processed and released while 119,327 candidates, representing 6.61 per cent had some subjects still being processed.
According to him, a total of 1,332,089 candidates, which represents 73.79 per cent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects with or without English and Mathematics.
While giving a further breakdown of the results, Dangut announced that the results of 215,267 candidates, representing 11.92 per cent, were withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
He said: “This is 4.3 per cent lower than the 16.29 per cent recorded in the WASSCE for school candidates in 2023.
“The increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall, in spite of existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools, are other nagging issues. All the cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council for consideration and final decisions. The council will continue to sanction all cases of examination malpractice as schools, supervisors, teachers and candidates perpetrating this evil are not helping the educational system. All hands must, therefore, be on deck to sanitise the system.”
He, therefore, urged candidates affected by the examination malpractice to make their defence or complaints via https://waecinternational.org/complaints
While urging candidates to proceed to check their results through the council’s website: www.waecdirect.org, he also implored those that had fulfilled their financial obligations to the council to apply for their digital certificates, which would be released 48 hours thereafter.
