We Are Investigating Police Character Certificate Gotten For A Prisoner- Police

Nigeria Police said an investigation has commenced on a Police Character Certificate (PCC) gotten for a prisoner by an investigative journalist.

Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) on Wednesday, published a report ” With ₦45,000, I Got Valid Police Character Certificate for Kirikiri Prison Inmate.

According to the report, Daniel Ojukwu, FIJ’s investigative reporter, allegedly with the help of DSP Stella Agidin – a police officer attached to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) – used passport data page of an inmate in Kirikiri Medium Correctional Facility in Lagos State and a fake passport photograph to obtain a PCC.

The inmate, according to FIJ, has already spent four years in the Kirikiri Correctional Facility and was yet to be released. The report added that the reporter using the name of the inmate, planned to travel to Ghana.

The report added that the reporter had to pay ₦45,000 allegedly requested by the police personnel involved, and was issued the Police Character Certificate without any security verification.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said investigation has commenced on the report and personnel allegedly involved in the transaction.

On his X handle on Thursday, Adejobi said after investigation, police will address the issue and update Nigerians.

This has been brought to our notice. We have instituted an investigation into this case immediately. We will, however, reach out to you in the course of our investigation (to Daniel Ojukwu). The police will address this matter perfectly and update Nigerians,” he wrote.
